16-year-old Vietnamese racing driver Alex Sawer (Sawer Hoàng Đạt) will step up to the FIA Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine (FRECA) this year with KIC Evans GP. Asian Motorsport reviews the move and reflects on Sawer’s achievements so far.

Sawer’s progression to Formula Regional comes after a successful rookie year in car racing, where he became the first Vietnamese driver to win a race in an FIA-sanctioned event during the fourth round of the Formula 4 Indian Championship at the Madras International Circuit.

Throughout his first full formula racing series, Sawer held his own against an international grid of drivers who had achieved race wins and podiums in the Italian F4, Euro4, F4 UAE, GB4, and S5000 championships. The 16-year-old achieved six podium finishes in the fifteen-race season.

Sawer “excited” to “gain valuable experience”

Sawer will join Australian racing driver and FIA Formula Regional Middle East Championship podium finisher Costa Toparis in KIC Evans GP’s FRECA line-up, with Thai racer Nandhavud Bhirombakhdi also driving for KIC Motorsport. All three drivers will have the opportunity to compete at an elite international level at ten current or former Grand Prix circuits.

With a rich background in domestic and international karting, Sawer is keen to build on his existing results and develop his skills throughout his 2024 FRECA campaign.

“FRECA will be a new challenge for me, with a new car, new circuits, and a new racing environment,” he said in an Evans GP press release. “I’m excited to embrace this and gain valuable experience. I’m also looking forward to progressing up from the F4 Indian Championship, which has done a lot to support drivers like myself on the FIA Global Pathway.”

Evans GP Director Josh Evans added, “It’s a pleasure to welcome Alex to KIC Evans GP for the 2024 FRECA season. Having worked with him in the 2023 F4 Indian Championship, I was impressed with his raw talent and attitude towards racing.

“Sawer’s ability to deliver strong performance against experienced competitors was impressive, and I look forward to continuing our partnership and working with him to develop as a professional driver.”
