A challenging Sprint Qualifying session for RB saw drivers Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo place 14th and 16th respectively. Hear what they had to say about the session below.

Tsunoda: “I’m not happy with today”

  • Free Practice 1: Best lap: 1:06.579, pos. 9th, 30 laps
  • Sprint Qualifying: Best lap: (SQ1) 1:06.557, (SQ2) 1:05.960, pos. 14th

Tsunoda expressed his disappointment after a challenging Sprint Qualifying session. Despite showing promising pace in the first practice session, his run in SQ1 was marred by a spin in the last sector. This significantly compromised his performance in SQ2 due to potential floor damage.

“I’m not happy with today,” Tsunoda said. “For sure, the second run in SQ1 with my spin in the last sector compromised our SQ2 run. I over-pushed and went slightly over the limit in Turn 7, and I think I damaged the floor already there and not necessarily when I spun out in Turn 10.

“It wasn’t the ideal way to enter SQ2, especially with the adaptation in driving style. It’s a shame and definitely towards me; I’ll take the blame and move forward.”

Ricciardo: Austria GP track “always going to be tricky”

  • Free Practice 1: Best lap: 1:06.962, pos. 16th, 31 laps
  • Sprint Qualifying: Best lap: (SQ1) 1:06.581, pos. 16th

A difficult sprint qualifying session for Ricciardo saw him miss out on SQ2. Despite this, the Australian driver remains optimistic after changes were made to the car following FP1, as he continues to learn more about the VCARB-01 beneath him. His focus is now on using the Sprint to gather more data and improve the car’s performance for the rest of the weekend.

“It’s a short lap here, so it’s always going to be tricky,” he said. “We changed quite a lot from FP1, and we’re still trying to learn about the package, but obviously, it’s frustrating when you miss out by a small bit.

“The second lap of the Sprint-Quali was definitely better than the first one, but we still need to finetune some things. I do think we made the right changes, but maybe we need to balance it better. We’ll try to use the Sprint to understand the car always more, so I’m staying optimistic.”

Permane: “A tough sprint qualifying session” for RB

Permane reflected on “a tough Sprint Qualifying session” in Austria, adding, “We’ve done some experimentation this morning after our difficult weekend in Barcelona, and it was very good to do because we learnt a lot.

“Daniel had a lot of changes for the Sprint Qualifying session, and it’s always difficult with one set of tyres. We knew needing to nail that firt lap was going to be difficult to get the best out of the car. However, it’s a long weekend and we’ll learn more in the Sprint tomorrow, and then we have another shot at qualifying in the evening.”

Commenting on Tsunoda’s performances, Permane said, “Yuki unfortunately went off on his second lap in SQ1 and damaged his floor. Without that, I’m very sure he would’ve been higher up. We’ll repair his floor overnight and make sure he’s got a perfect car for tomorrow.”

As the team moves into Saturday’s sessions, the lessons learned from Friday’s FP1 and Sprint Qualifying will be crucial in optimising their performance for the rest of the weekend.
