The Kazakhstan MotoGP will not take place and is set to be replaced by a second round in Qatar.

Initially scheduled to debut in 2023, the Kazakhstan MotoGP was pushed back by a year due to work on the Sokol Circuit being delayed.

The 2024 round was set to take place on the 14-16 July, but extreme flooding in the region caused the event to be delayed yet again.

MotoGP promoters decided to reschedule the event to the weekend of the 20-22 October, replacing the cancelled Indian Grand Prix at the Buddh International Circuit.

However, the lack of guarantees offered by the Kazakhstani organisers has ultimately jeopardised Sokol’s chances of hosting a MotoGP round this year.

Although Dorna has sent contingents to speed up the work at the circuit in recent months, Sokol’s remote location and the lack of nearby infrastructure has hindered progress.

Second round scheduled for Qatar?

The Kazakhstan MotoGP’s impending cancellaation makes this the third race this year to be cancelled after the Indian and Argentinian rounds. However, the total number of events this year will remain at 20.

Dorna and other MotoGP management bodies are discussing the potential of hosting a second round at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar, where this season’s opening event took place.

This would make it the second time in MotoGP’s history that Qatar will feature twice on the same calendar, after 2021 saw the nation host back-to-back events at Losail.

After a Qatar replacement round taking place, the series would then move to Indonesia and Japan, before closing its Asian leg with events in Australia, Thailand, and Malaysia.
