Round 2 of the 2024 Formula Regional Middle East Championship got underway at the Yas Marina Circuit, with two Testing sessions on Thursday and one Free Practice on Friday.

Sainteloc Racing’s Theophile Nael topped the time sheets with a 1:50.284, only 0.087 seconds up from P2.

R-ace GP’s Tuukka Taponen secured P2 with a 1:50.371, closely followed by Mumbai Falcons teammates James Wharton and Ugo Ugochukwu, who secured P3 and P4 with a 1:50.679 and a 1:50.729, respectively.

The second testing session saw Taponen claim P1 as the only driver to break into the 1:49s, with a 1:49.969. Evans GP Costa Toparis surged to the front row with a 1:50.162, putting him in P2. While MP Motorsport’s Valerio Rinicella rounded out the top three with a 1:50.369. Toparis’ Evans GP teammate John Bennett also worked his way up with a 1:50.388, putting him in P4 and only 0.019 seconds from Rinicella.

Both testing sessions saw the drivers getting used to the GP configuration of the Yas Marina Circuit, after racing on the Corkscrew layout last weekend. The drivers faced strict track limit enforcement from the stewards, causing many lap times to be deleted throughout the sessions.

Toparis continued his fine form for Friday’s Free Practice session, clocking in at 1:50.208 and securing P1. Taponen wasn’t far off with a 1:50.24, and his fellow R-ace GP teammate Maritnius Stenshorne rounded out the top three with a 1:50.410.

Last weekend’s winners, Mumbai Falcon’s Arvid Lindblad and PHM AIX’s Taylor Barnard finished in P4 and P11, respectively.

Out of the 29 cars on the grid, the top 20 all finished within 0.942 seconds of each other, indicating the level of competition and an exciting two qualifying sessions to come.

Qualifying 1 will happen at 17:45, and Qualifying 2 is at 18:05, all local time (GMT +04).
