As the Formula Regional Middle East Championship gears up for Round 2 at the iconic Yas Marina Circuit, drivers are set to tackle the renowned GP configuration, a significant shift from the corkscrew layout of the previous round. This configuration, famously used in the annual Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, boasts a 1.2-kilometer straight, 21 challenging turns, and an impressive total length of 5.554 kilometres.

Following last weekend’s track limits drama, drivers are keen to navigate the GP layout cleanly and avoid the issues that affected final classifications in Round 1. The FRMEC races will unfold in tandem with the 6 Hours of Abu Dhabi, creating a motorsport spectacle for fans.

Championship leader Taylor Barnard dominated the opening round, claiming pole position in both qualifying sessions and securing victory in the inaugural race of the Formula Regional Middle East 2024 season. Race 3 witnessed another triumph for PHM AIX’s Barnard, capitalising on a penalty that saw R-ace GP’s Martinius Stenshorne relegated to P2.

Stenshorne, trailing Barnard by just 6 points in the championship, aims to bounce back after claiming P3 in Race 1 and Race 2, and a second-place finish in Race 3. His R-ace GP teammate Tuukka Taponen holds the third spot in the standings with 38 points, marked by a P2 in Race 1, P6 in Race 2, and P4 in Race 3.

Race 2 winner Arvid Lindblad, a Red Bull Junior driver, occupies P4 in the championship with 30 points, displaying a consistent top-10 pace in the fiercely competitive field. R-ace GP’s Zachary David, who secured P2 in Race 2, finds himself in P6 in the driver standings.

Mumbai Falcon’s Ugo Ugochukwu, securing P3 in Race 3, holds the ninth spot in the driver championship.

With an intensely competitive grid, all eyes are on Taylor Barnard to witness whether he can maintain or even extend his championship lead at the Yas Marina Circuit this weekend.
